Stuart Sullivan started playing music at age 10, and was in bands by age 12. His musical odyssey twisted to the left in college when he discovered a recording studio. He soon became the house engineer at Indiana University’s Musical Arts Center, recording operas, orchestras and jazz bands. Only after arriving in Austin did mainstream music become part of his working vocabulary. Projects with Alejandro Escavedo and Dino Lee soon swerved him into becoming the house-recording engineer for Willie Nelson and Clifford Antone’s legendary blues label. A record with Nick Lowe brought him to London for a year and upon his return he met his match in the Butthole Surfers and Paul Leary, a partnership that endures to this day.
The next decade brought hit records with the Surfers, Sublime, and Meat Puppets while continuing his relation with Antone’s and Willie. In 2001, Stuart Sullivan opened his own studio, Wire Recording and continued his doctorate in songwriting with multiple records by Robert Earl Keen, Stephen Bruton, James McMurtry, Roky Erikson, Junior Brown, and Dave Alvin. Stuart loves working with all the different flavors of music in his artistic gumbo, picking up GRAMMYs with Jimmie Vaughan and Pinetop Perkins, collecting and rereleasing the Doug Sahm archives, and always pairing up with old friend Paul Leary. He continues operating Wire Recording and enjoys working with great musicians, young and old.
Stuart and Wire Recording have recently partnered up with the Mosaic Sound Collective to launch a sustainable music community complex in Austin. In his “free time” Stuart became a founding partner of Lucky Hound Music Group and runs Lucky Hound Records.
